About Laura
My name is Dr. Young and I am a college professor of political science and a department chair. I bring both academic expertise and practical coaching to every tutoring session. I work with students who want clear guidance, high standards, and feedback that explains exactly what to change and how to improve. I keep sessions focused, organized, and professional, with the goal of helping you produce stronger work now while building skills you can reuse. I tutor essay writing and revision, AP US Government, personal statements, thesis writing, public speaking, debate and Model UN style argumentation, and social science data analysis. I also teach practical AI literacy, including how to use modern AI tools responsibly for studying, brainstorming, and revision without cutting corners. My background includes extensive experience with legal and academic writing and regular conference presenting and multiple research publications as well as one book. So, I know what polished, credible communication looks like in real settings. You can expect structured sessions with clear goals, direct feedback, and a supportive tone. I tailor lessons to your level and your task, whether you need to raise an AP score, strengthen a college paper, prepare for an interview, or turn a draft into a confident final submission. I tutor with a coaching style that stays structured, practical, and goal driven. I start by identifying what you need to do next and why it matters, then we break the work into a clear plan you can execute. I teach by modeling the skill, practicing it together, and then having you try it independently with targeted feedback. I use direct revision notes, quick checklists, and simple frameworks so you can repeat the process on your own rather than depending on a tutor forever.
A typical session begins with a short check in on your assignment, rubric, or test goals, followed by a fast diagnostic of strengths and gaps. We then work through one focused task, such as building an outline, revising a thesis, improving paragraph structure, strengthening evidence and citations, or practicing AP Government FRQs. For data analysis or basic AI literacy, we take a similar approach: define the question, choose the right tool or method, run the steps carefully, and then translate results into plain language. You leave each session with a clean set of next steps and a plan for what to do before our next meeting.
What sets me apart as a tutor is the combination of real teaching experience across levels and real professional experience in legal and academic settings.
