About Ian

I hold a PhD in English and a degree in History, with approximately fifteen years of experience in academia. My background combines university teaching, interdisciplinary research, and sustained engagement with the challenges of scholarly writing.

My research and teaching interests span literature, cultural production, histories of gender and sexuality, race, disability, and critical theory. Working across these fields has taught me to attend closely to how writers build arguments, interpret evidence, engage with scholarship, and communicate complex ideas.

Having completed a dissertation myself, I understand the intellectual demands and uncertainty that can accompany a long research project. I bring that experience to my work with students, alongside a thoughtful, direct, and collaborative approach. I enjoy helping writers recognize what is compelling in their work and find a clearer way to develop it.

About the lesson

Writing a dissertation or thesis can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re struggling to organize your research, develop your argument, or turn your ideas into a clear draft. I offer individual support to help you move forward with greater confidence and direction.

With a PhD in English and years of university teaching experience, I specialize in humanities research and writing, including literature, history, gender, sexuality, race, disability, and critical theory.

Our sessions focus on what you need at your current stage: refining a research question, planning chapters, strengthening an argument, connecting sources, improving academic style, or responding to supervisor feedback. We can work closely with an extract of your writing or use the session to think through ideas and establish manageable next steps.

My approach is collaborative and tailored to your project. I ask questions, explain my feedback, and help you develop revision strategies you can use independently. Your ideas, decisions, and writing remain your own.

I welcome undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students, including those writing in English as an additional language. Advance reading can be arranged, with the scope agreed before each session.
