About Laura

Hi! I’m Laura, and I’m an elementary school teacher with nine years of classroom experience. I currently teach 5th grade, with a focus on English Language Arts and Social Science.

One of my favorite parts of teaching is helping students grow more confident in their reading and writing, especially when they start to see that something they’ve struggled with is actually something they can do. I’ve worked with students with a wide range of strengths and needs, and I’m comfortable adjusting my approach depending on the student.

I’m patient, encouraging, and pretty easygoing. I want students to feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and being honest when they don’t understand something. My goal is for students to feel supported while also becoming more confident and independent learners.

About the lesson

I’ve been an elementary and middle school teacher for nine years, and one of the biggest things I’ve learned is that kids don’t all learn in the same way. When I tutor, I try to figure out what a student already understands, where they’re getting stuck, and what kind of support will actually be useful for them.

I specialize in reading and writing and can help with things like reading comprehension, vocabulary, finding the main idea or theme, making inferences, and using evidence from a text. With writing, I can help students come up with ideas, organize their thoughts, develop stronger paragraphs, revise and edit, and work on grammar and sentence structure. I’m also happy to help with assignments students are working on in school.

Sessions will look a little different depending on the student. Usually, we’ll start by talking through what we’re working on, I’ll model or explain a skill, and then we’ll practice it together before the student tries it more independently. If something isn’t clicking, I’m used to finding another way to explain it rather than just repeating the same thing.

Because I’m currently a classroom teacher, I have a good sense of what students are being asked to do in school and where they commonly struggle. I also know how important confidence is. I want students to feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and telling me when they don’t understand something.

I primarily work with students in grades 3–8 who need extra support in reading, writing, or ELA. I’m comfortable working with students who are struggling with a particular skill, want ongoing academic support, or could use some extra challenge.
