About John

I have been teaching and/or tutoring in some capacity since 2000. With my company Kern Oxford Tutoring I developed the "Oxford personalized prescription for success," derived from my time at New College, Oxford University in England. As a teacher I've earned great reviews on ratemyprofessor.com, and most importantly I have confidence in you - the student. Anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

About the lesson

My pedagogy is based on scaffolding. In writing I start with the core concept that "the basis of all good academic writing is the 'strong, simple sentence.'" Writing a competent essay is impossible without the ability to write a competent sentence, which is why my first assignment to my students is always the sentence patterns exam that I developed for teaching transfer level college English. I will help you to identify, and understand, common errors and locate your inner writer - everybody has one.
