About Andrea
I have had a passion for reading and language arts since childhood. I attended Southwestern State University where I received my Bachelor's Degree with a major in English Education and a Minot in history. I taught English for a year, but realized that my real passion was helping students with the research process and reader's advisory. I returned to college at the University of North Texas where I received my Masters Degree in Library and Information Science.
I was hired as a children's/youth librarian with the Memphis/Shelby County library in Memphis, TN.
I returned to Texas in 1993 and worked as an elementary librarian with Arlington ISD for 5 years and helped open a new junior high for 3 years.
I moved to Houston in 2006 and started working with an inhome tutoring program for 1 1/2 years. In 2008 I opened a new library at a career college where I assisted students in the library and was also the test Procter.
I mived back to the Texas Panhandle in 2013 and taught English 2 years. I also did TSI test prep with high school seniors to help them get into community college. I also taught developmental English and writing.
I worked for 2 years with another in home tutoring company which was very rewarding to help students improve their state rest scores.
In 2016, I got hired by the Amarillo ISD where I work at two elementary campuses as the librarian. I have also assisted students in small groups and individually.
What I love most about teaching and tutoring is when students get that look that I can tell that they are understanding and can start doing skills on their own.
Having both an English degree and a Msters in library science has helped me share my passion for learning. Throughout my career I have worked a large number of students and have many successful sessions. I have also been train to work with students who have Dyslexa and enjoy helping them learn that they are capable of learning, they just have to find a method of learning that works best for them.

The most important step for getting to know the student is to introduce myself and work on trusting the process. I'll have the student/and or parents share assignments and tests to get an overall picture of what areas the student is needing assistance with. Once I gather that information, I will bring practice materials and if they need assistance with homework, I have the student show me how they approach their assignments. This gives me a better idea as to whether it's a particular akill, issues reading directions, or if they learn a different way than how the student is taught in the classroom.
