About Catherine

I teach writing using the 6 Traits of Writing program. This program examines the 6 skills of Organization, Ideas, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Conventions and Voice. This includes studying grammar, phonics for spelling and incorporating quotes in writing.

I teach students to proofread their work and focus on self development. Most 3-6th grade students will see growth within 4 weeks. Within 12 weeks I want to see my students successfully write and self-evaluate a 3-5 paragraph essay.

I have a bachelors and masters in Elementary Education. I have taught 3ed and 6th grade classrooms and am familiar with the educational standards across K-9th grade. I have worked with a wide variety of public and home schooled students from kindergarten to high school. I can help with general tutoring, curriculum planning and dignostic testing for students behind their grade level.

I have additional training in K-12 Reading in the areas of phonics instruction, comprehension and decoding skills. My masters, while in Elementary Education, also had a focus of TESOL, giving me a better understanding and more hands-on experience teaching English.

About the lesson

I tutor using Zoom and request that a parent or guardian be present at our first meeting. Prior to meeting with me, I will ask for a writing sample and provide a writing prompt if needed. I will also request that you email me photos of your child's homework, test reports or any other pertinent documents. This enables me to clearly see their weak areas and come prepared to help them in these specific areas.

I have experience working with special needs students, English language learners, public school and home school students. I also do homeschool coaching- curriculum choices, evaluations and student motivation.

Look to hire a tutor who teaches, not just one who helps with homework. A good tutor will evaluate the underlying skills a student is missing and teach the entire skill. Help with homework normally implies that the student will be guided towards a correct answer without a complete understanding of why it is correct.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students and parents should consider how committed they are to seeing the student succeed. No gains will be made with out commitment and hard work. How much extra time a week does the student have for homework? Does the student need a reward for improvement shown? How badly does the student want to learn to write well?

$69/h

Details

I charge $35 an hour for writing tutoring. If your child does not have a writing prompt from the school's teacher, I will provide one each week to be completed and proofread. This gives me some of the student's writing each week to work on with them durning our session.

I charge $50 a week for one hour of writing tutoring and a program of nightly homework. After our hour of tutoring, the parent will be emailed a checklist of homework for 6 evenings a week. Homework will require 5-15 minutes a night and be talored to match the student's weaknesses as well as what I have taught in their hour of tutoring.
