About Lily
I have a BA in International Politics from a top London university. I also hold a Master's degree in English, specializing in Composition and Rhetoric. I love teaching. I have three years experience teaching Freshman composition at the college level, and I have recently returned from working with vulnerable students in the UK. I believe that progress looks different for every student and I am willing to go above and beyond to help meet whatever goals are in place. I always provide constructive feedback, suggesting ways to improve as opposed to 'things that are wrong'. For difficult concepts, I try to make them more appealing by integrating pop culture, film, and music references. To me, learning is an exchange. I will make sure that my students succeed, whatever that might look like, and in return I learn to look at the world through a different perspective.
What I enjoy most about the work I do is that I learn something new every day, whether it's about my students or about the world in general. I love seeing a student make progress, witnessing their pride in their own achievements and being there for the moment when the metaphorical lightbulb switches on.
I have a Bachelor's degree in International Politics and a MA in English. I have worked as an Instructor of First-Year English at the University of South Carolina for the three years. I recently returned from the UK where I worked as an Intervention Tutor with a vulnerable group of girls, giving them additional support in and outside of lessons.

The first time I meet any student, I like to take the time to get to know them. By asking about their interests outside of school, I learn what they value and what engages their attention. I also offer students the opportunity to ask me any questions, which I have found makes students feel more at ease in the learning environment. Then, once we are comfortable with each other, I turn to asking about educational interests, getting students to identify their academic strengths and what they feel they can work on.
Most of my experience comes from working with college Freshman, aged between 17-19. I also have experience working with 15-16 year old girls at a single sex school in the United Kingdom. I am also the oldest of four - my brothers are 12 and 13, and I often help with their school work, so I have experience working with younger children in a less professional setting.
Look for a tutor that you feel you can identify with. On the first meeting, see what things you might have in common with the tutor because that will make it much easier to build a working relationship full of trust. Further, be honest about what you want to get out of the interaction, and about what you want the tutor to focus on. Think about the stage you're at in your education. Consider whether you want to look at the present moment, or whether you want to focus on the next stage of your education.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
How invested am I in this?
How specific are my needs? Do I need to look at detailed things, or do I need general support?
What can I do well?
What needs improvement?
What's next for me?
