About Margaret
Hello! I write, tutor, teach, coach, counsel, train, edit, read and learn in my sleep as well as during waking hours:) I have 2 little boys of whom I've had the pleasure of homeschooling and shaping into the extraordinary little people they are. My mission in life is to teach and shape all minds, both the young and old. I have 10 years experience working as a holistic health counselor and in the tri-state area of NYC and have tutored students in writing, GRE prep, social sciences and humanities, psychology, philosophy, law and writing to name just a few specialties.
I am currently using my International Relations degree from the University of Chicago to teach ESL to foreign students, particularly those from China, and I also assist them in writing their admissions essays to Ivy League U.S. Schools. I have been doing this off and on for 3 years. Prior to this, I worked as a political analyst for Boeing. I scored a near perfect score on the verbal section of the GRE and it was a result of hard work and discipline and I want to help, motivate and encourage anyone within my radar, how to actualize his/her academic and professional goals. I was the only one at University of Chicago to get an A in my writing class and I was on the Dean's List several times during my undergraduate work at U.C. Irvine. Attached, please find my linkedin profile and please feel free to contact me should have you have any questions.
Oddly enough it was my two boys that turned me onto it, as I derived such great joy in playing a pivotal role in shaping their futures. That and it's just a talent God gave me. If you are familiar with the Myers Brigg assessment tests, I am an INFJ and we basically teach, counsel, write, communicate, philosophize and compassionately help anyone we can.
I have an MA in International Relations from the University of Chicago as well as a BA in Political Science and Humanities from U.C. Irvine. I have a lot of experience coaching my boys in my capacity as their mother, which perhaps is my greatest accomplishment to date; but in their school work as well. I have successfully turned tantrums into mindfulness exercises and techniques for when they become overwhelmed. They love working with me because I break things down into piecemeal, I make things fun, and I go over a problem step by step to make sure they fully understand and have mastery over whatever it is they are working on.

First I sit down with them and get to know them, learn their names and find out their interests and hobbies just to establish a meaningful connection and build rapport. I then ask what they would like to accomplish both long-term and short-term, while taking copious notes. I then say back to them what they have told me and make sure I have it all correct. And from there, I discuss how we can break it down into easier chunks and demonstrate to them a typical lesson plan.
Well my 2 boys are 7 and 8 and I have taught them for two years. So grades Kindergarten-2nd pretty much every day. In addition, I have assisted students coming from China to the U.S. to attend our nation's top undergraduate (and sometimes graduate) universities. I do that over zoom but also offering them written feedback explaining any edits I make on their papers and list suggestions and areas to ommit. The two students I work with here in the U.S. are in 9th and 11th grades- one girl, one boy.

I tend to charge $20/hour. It honestly depends on whether I'm teaching 2 kids at a time and/or what age and subject matter we are dealing with. For example, I would charge $12 for an elementary school student just trying to master basics. However, for an adult taking an AP English class, around $35.
