About Masey

Hi there! My name is Masey, and I'm passionate about writing and helping students become better writers. My tutoring style involves making sessions fun through activities, award systems, and prop demonstrations. Because I have worked with students ranging from the age of 4 all the way to graduate school students, I am experienced in teaching basic concepts in a simple way, as well as advanced ideas with critical thinking skills.

I recently graduated with a BA in Journalism and a minor in English. Throughout school, I was a Certified Master Tutor at the Academic Success Center on my campus. While there, I made a conscious effort not to just edit the writing, but to work through mistakes together, as well as preserve and magnify the student's voice.

For about a year, I have been teaching English by video camera to Chinese speaking students all over the world. I have learned how to teach grammar, phonics, and more in a simple and demonstrative way to students from 4-14 over all knowledge levels. I have also worked for several newspapers and offer freelance writing services.

As the oldest of 4 girls, I have mastered the art of patience, as well as trying new methods if the student isn't grasping the concept initally. I am the happy cat mother of Lola and Mella, and I enjoy playing video games, shopping, and painting. Can't wait to meet you!

My favorite moment when tutoring is when a student is struggling with something, and they finally have their "lightbulb" moment, and everything finally makes sense.

I got started teaching my freshman year of college when I realized my scholarship money didn't quite cover my shopping hobby... I have always been a writer, so I immediately turned to the Academic Success Center on my university's campus to use my skills to help others be more successful in college. After being hired, I received training, as well as continuous training throughout my years there, and gained the Master Tutor Certification. It was there that I found that the best part of tutoring a student was when they have their "lightbulb" moment.

I have 3 years of experience as a Reading and Writing Tutor at Sam Houston State University's Academic Success Center where I helped undergraduate and graduate students improve their writing skills or understand literary concepts. While there, I received my BA in Journalism with a minor in English. I had the opportuniy to produce content for many publications over the years and often take on freelance writing projects. Since recently graduating, I have been tutoring English to Chinese speaking students by video camera ranging in ages from 4-14 and different knowledge levels.

When meeting a new student, I think it's important to begin by discussing the student's expectations and goals so that I am able to ensure we are meeting them together. I also like to ask them about their preferred learning styles, as well as their strengths and weaknesses.

I have worked with children just beginning their first English lesson and all the way through older adults in higher education. Most importantly, my students' writing and reading levels have ranged from: requiring lessons in vocab, grammar, and reading; to forming paragraphs and reading books; to developing essays and critical thinking skills; to having complete, well-written works that need to be reviewed in detail.

I think the most important thing you need to decide is if you are looking for a tutor who will simply fix your errors for you, or if you want a tutor that will help you find the errors on your own, explain why it is wrong, and teach you how to avoid it in the future. Depending on your needs and learning process, either could be beneficial.

My most recent proud teaching moment is when I taught a trick to a student that I used myself: even has 4 letters and odd has 3 letters, so she could simply match the number of letters of her vocab words to her known odd and even numbers. In our next lesson, we came to a page about even and odd numbers, and the student immediately counted the numbers in both words and matched accordingly. I was so happy to know that she remembered my trick, and it was helpful to her.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would ask students to consider the following:

-What do I want to accomplish?
     -What are my goals?
     -How do I learn best?
-What are my strengths and weaknesses?
-How much time and effort do I want to commit to this?
-What does my ideal tutoring session sound like?
