About Ivy

My greatest passion in life is teaching and learning from my students. I was born and raised in Kenya and experienced great success due to amazing teachers. As this is the foundation of my commitment to assisting my students to grow their abilities and interpersonal skills. I recently completed my postgraduate degree in Economics, rounding out my undergraduate in English, Mathematical Economics and Psychology as subjects. I have been tutoring for the past 5 years. I have experience in tutoring kids from 5-17years assisting them with homework, spelling and their conventional skills. As well as adults 18+yrs old with the essay construction, conversational skills and public speaking.

I charge $ 12-15 per session

I tutor students at primary, secondary and university levels and any adults who would be interested in improving their skills as well.

Helping students break language barriers to achieve their dreams and objectives. Becoming the person they are meant to be, boosting their self-esteem and confidence to face other challenges that they may face in the future.

In High school I participated in Community Engagement where we walked two kilometres to a less privileged primary school and offered after school tutoring services to the children especially those seating for their final exam that year. Helping them get good grades that allowed them to qualify for secondary school inspired me to take up tutoring even as I attended university. I love to assist others grow and achieve their dreams.

I have been awarded my undergraduate and postgraduate degree majoring in Economics and Organisational Psychology. With +5yrs experience in tutoring chrildren from ages 1-16yrs(both in Elementary and High school) and college students in their first, second and third year. In addition I have training in basic counseling and wellness.

About the lesson

I normally follow this process with new students:

- Introduction and icebreaker game (Names, age, likes and dislikes).

- Creating with the student a safe space where they feel comfortable to ask questions and feel they are being listened to.

-Establishing house rules to be followed by both tutor and student i.e punctuality and times to meet for sessions.

-Tackle the topic of the day.

- Recap, QnA and rewards period after the coursework of the day is completed.

-Conclusion and any recommendations to incorporate into our next session.

I have worked with students of diverse ages and backgrounds. Tutorung classes with students ranging from 1-7yrs during their formative years for reading, pronunciation and writing skills. Elementary pupils ranging from 8-14years, High school students 14-17years and college students in their first, second and third year.

Pick a tutor with experience in the subject and in dealing with students from diverse backgrounds. Also a tutor that is aseas to learn from the student as the student is enthusiastic to learn from the tutor.

I understand that Covid-19 has its negative side effects but it also has a positive side where people have come together all over the world to support each other breaking previously set barriers and uniting individuals into a community.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should feel free to ask questions where they find difficulty either with the work we cover during our sessions or work their cover at school. It is our responsibility as tutors to create that safe space where the student feels free enough to express themselves and to feel listened to.

Details

My standard price is $15 per session. For example if the request is tutoring in English then this price depending on the student's level it will include improving their basic reading and writing skills, pronunciation and review of test/assignments as required. It is an open and flexible plan where as any additional services will be discussed with the student and added to the schedule.
