About Sophie

I have been tutoring and helping out in classrooms for 5+ years. I have helped with college essays (I myself will be attending Barnard College of Columbia University) and have tutored students at my high school and middle school. I specialize in English / Language Arts and am passionate about literature. I plan on becoming an English Teacher and am willing to help with anything. I have won many local and national writing awards including but not limited to: Germantown Friends High School Creative Writing Department Award, Pennsylvania Bar Mock Trial Performance Award, and Columbia Scholastic's Press Association Award for Best High School Magazine. I was an editor, contributor, and supervisor of my school's award winning Newspaper/Magazine. I have taken 3 advanced English classes (the most my school offers) as well as many seminars on writing and reading. Currently, I am working my way through all of Shakespeare's works! My personal writing portfolio (which includes published and unpublished pieces) is sophieborgenicht.com.

I love helping people with education because it teaches me so much. Every time I can connect with another student is just a way that I can further my own personal growth by learning from others as much as they can learn from me. I love forming those connections.

I have always been passionate about education. When I took part in my school's Education Justice club, I learned about how important the education system truly is, and I started to pile my resources so that I could teach and help others succeed.

I am a high school graduate taking a gap year before entering an Ivy-League institution. I have first hand experience of HS curriculums and have taken many advanced classes. I have tutored in English, Math, Social Studies, and Spanish (a language in which I am proficient and can speak at an intermediate/fluent level.) I have taken many AP tests, and though my school does not follow the AP curriculum I have done very well. When I am not tutoring or learning myself, I work for an education non-profit called Literacy Design Collaborative.

Typically, I would like to get to know the student first and foremost. Each student has something that makes them special, and I would like to find out who they are and what sort of teaching methods work for them so that I can focus best on personalizing the experience. I'd like to find out what drives them, what they are passionate about, and then find ways together to work their natural passions into the material.

I work with all types of students! Typically, I have worked with middle and high school students, but I have also helped out in lower school classrooms.

I would say that getting to know and forming a relationship with a teacher, especially an English teacher, is an invaluable opportunity! So much of this field is open to interpretation, so it's impossible to approach it without connecting personally.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What kind of learner are you? What kind of people do you mesh with? What do you want to get out of the teaching experience? What are your goals? What are your concerns? How do you think this experience could or should help you grow?
