About Brian
I am energetic, passionate and understanding. I will help you or your child to master the material, whether it is grammar, reading, essays or the SAT. I encourage curiosity and exploration while teaching fundamentals. Beyond academics, I will also teach organizational skills.
I have been teaching high school English for 11 years and formerly owned my own pre-school and tutoring business. I have AVID and College Board AP certification and also teach SAT prep courses.
I have taught SAT prep classes for 7 years, being the guide for students to perform at their highest level on the test. The service I have provided those students is inexpensive compared to the levels of colleges they have been able to enter.
I have taught high school English and AVID for 10 years and currently instruct teachers on best practices for running effective classrooms. I also lead IEP meetings, using my extensive knowledge of differentiating instruction to make accommodations and modifications for students effective.

For SAT training, before our first lesson I read a new student's writing samples and have the student do a diagnostic test. I then address immediate areas of need and test taking strategies. From there, we work on practice tests sometimes in short and sometimes in complete sections. Throughout, we review the areas of need and test performance. Our goal is to reach 800 on the test and I work to improve all of my student's ELA skill to get there.
For normal tutoring classes, I talk with the student and parent about the class(es) in which the student needs help. I also discuss with them their educational goals.
We will go over material that is giving him/her problems and then build a curriculum to ensure mastery of the material for this assignment/unit and for future assignments that require the same skills.
I work with students from all backgrounds, including minority students, English learners, special education, socio-economically disadvantaged, and homeless.
I have run my own pre-school and tutoring center for students up to junior high school, and taught high school and college classes.
As a parent, you need to know a few things:
does the tutor you are considering hiring have the appropriate level of education (a high-achieving high school student can be a good tutor for an elementary student depending on their ability to define specific skills and explain them in ways your child understands)?,
does the tutor have the personality and temperament to make your child feel comfortable, to build a working relationship, and to motivate your student?,
does the tutor's schedule fit your schedule? If the time is right for them, but your child is usually too tired or busy at that time, you should shop around more. If they are unreliable, save yourself the time and heartache, and release them immediately,
if the cost is prohibitive but the tutor is the right fit for you, find out if they do group lessons. It is better to spend more money for quality service than to spend less for help that doesn't meet all of your child's needs- your kids will only be young for so long and so much is on the line, so it is worth the extra leg-work to find a study friend if you know your tutor is the best for you.
