About Crystal

I like to joke that my teaching began at an early age when my extended family would put me– the oldest grandchild– in charge of all my siblings and cousins (a whopping 10 of them), and I would force them to play "school" with me, where I was the teacher. Teachers notoriously do not get paid enough for all their work, so I pursued other fields as a result. However, after graduating college, I gave up the opportunity to a high paying job to pursue my dream of being a teacher because I knew that if I had to work for the next 40 years of my life, I wanted to do something I loved.

I like to begin by getting to know my students' personalities, what they perceive to be their strengths and weaknesses, and their goals. From there, I outline some expectations, and we work together to establish mutual respect and a common goal. I then want to know what they are currently learning in school by looking over their current and previous work. This process varies because education is not a one size fits all, but for the most part, this is how I like to begin our interactions.

I've worked with an array of ages. I began teaching kindergarteners and first graders, but overtime I grew fond of teaching older kids because I enjoy helping them navigate the tricky and complex thing we call life. Moreover, as we get older, life becomes more and more complicated, which requires the help of compassionate and patient mentors. I've helped college students with disabilities such as ADHD, depression, and anxiety succeed academically, which I find extremely rewarding.

The question everyone asks you as a kid is "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Instead ask yourself "Who do I wanna be when I grow up?", and find people in your life– mentors, friends, and peers– who will help you not only achieve that but make the growing process fun along the way.
