About Karen

Hi! I'm Kaz, a native English speaker from the sunny shores of Australia.

I’m an experienced educator who thrives on providing effective English language learning in a safe environment where you can relax and enjoy the process. No stress. No boredom. Let's just get you speaking and listening in flowing conversations, because the more you interact with a native speaker, the more your fluency will improve.

I have a calm demeanour and a sense of humour, and my students seem to appreciate my easy-to-understand Aussie accent. :)

I'm TESOL certified and I have four years of teaching experience as an ALT in Japan. During that time I also achieved Level 1 (the highest level) of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, so you can see I have a keen interest in language learning.

I’ve taught ESL at every level from kindergarten through to adult and I love seeing my students' confidence grow as a result of our interactions.

I have tutored high school students in maths, Japanese, and English and all of my students saw great improvement in their academic performance.

What I Offer:

• Ditch the boring learning materials and have fun

Learning doesn't have to be dry and monotonous! We'll agree on a movie or TV show to watch, or even an interesting book to read. You'll get listening and speaking practice without the tedium as we explore the plot, characters, acting and production during our discussions.

And it's no worries if you need captions (in either language) as you'll still be hearing the spoken words and, if you choose, reading the English captions as well. The goal is to accomplish real learning without it feeling like yet another gruelling task in your week.

• Note-taking without pressure

You're welcome to jot down notes, but you won't have to find time for written homework. However, if you ever want me to review your written materials during our class, I'm all ears (well, eyes)!

• Embracing mistakes

English can be a tricky language, and I wholeheartedly respect anyone who ventures into its complexities as a non-native speaker. In my class there's no judgment, only encouragement. Mistakes are like stepping stones on your journey to fluency. I'll gently highlight repeated errors so you can shine in your next conversation.

• Non-threatening learning

I create a non-threatening, supportive environment where you can thrive. Learning should be enjoyable, and you can count on me for a friendly, zero-pressure atmosphere.

• Downtime without the guilt

Watching a movie doesn't just offer enjoyment; it's a unique way to engage in organic listening practice whilst simultaneously soaking up natural idioms and even cultural awareness. Welcome to downtime with no guilt attached! Sit back, relax, and let the learning begin.
