About Kierstyn

What you should know about me is that I have been teaching 6th grade ELA for 6 years. I have my master's in Elementary Education, which covers grades k-6. I also have a minor that is focused in reading. I graduated from the University of Indianapolis in May of 2021, but began teaching as a temporary teacher in January of 2021 where I was then offered a permanent position at my current school I teach at. My students average a passing score that is above state average on ILEARN in the state of Indiana. I have also been rated highly effective in the classroom for the last four years.

About the lesson

In my class, students are taught based off of Indiana 6th grade ELA standards. These standards are focused on both reading and writing. Students in my class practice reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary every week. Throughout our lesson, students learn about narrative writing, informative writing, persuasive writing, and argumentative writing. They also learn how to analyze reading by identifying key story elements of classroom novels and short stories. We also focus on Greek and Latin roots in vocabulary terms. Then, students are also focused on daily grammar lessons that they complete independently or with my help if needed.

Kierstyn taught my son who has always struggled with dyslexia. He loved going to her class, it was often the highlight of his day. Her genuine, encouraging personality helped him gain confidence in his work and his abilities. She teaches in a way he could reach his potential and he felt comfortable asking for help.
Even though he has moved to the next grade level, he mentions going to her room for help if he can’t figure out homework regardless of the subject area. Kierstyn is a true blessing.
