About Bjorn (John)

I hold a 200-hour Level 5 TEFL Diploma from The TEFL Org, an accredited UK provider. Eighty of those hours were grammar and language awareness, and I can supply the certificate ID for verification.

English is my second language. I learned it to C2, which means I know where it gets difficult and can explain it from the learner’s side. Native speakers often know a sentence is right without being able to say why, and that gap is where I am useful.

My degree is a BSc in Spatial Development. I wrote my thesis in English and presented research at an international congress in Indonesia, where I led the fieldwork alongside a lecturer and three postgraduate students. Before that I spent two years coaching first-year students at my university.

I prepare for every lesson and keep notes between them, so you are not starting over each time we meet.

About the lesson

Lessons are built around you talking. I listen for the habit underneath the mistakes, because correcting slips one at a time changes nothing while fixing the habit behind them changes everything that follows.

A typical hour runs in three parts. Ten minutes of unstructured conversation so I can hear where you actually are. Placement tests are rarely right about this. Then we work on whatever surfaced in those ten minutes. The last twenty go to something real you need English for, so you finish the lesson with something done, and I send you two or three things to carry into the next one.

What I bring that most English tutors cannot is that English is my second language too. I learned it, so I know which parts stop making sense and why. Eighty of the two hundred hours in my Level 5 TEFL Diploma were grammar, so when you ask why a sentence works the way it does, you get a real answer.

Best suited to adults and teenagers at A2 and above who need English for study or work. I am most useful on academic and professional English: writing, presentations, reports, interviews. I wrote my degree thesis in English and presented research at an international congress, so I know that pressure from the inside. I also teach Dutch, which is my first language.
